Newby Hall Cricket Club, nestled in the heart of the historic Newby Hall estate, the home for over a century. Renowned for its blend of tradition and talent, the club has been a cornerstone of local cricket, fostering both seasoned champions and budding stars.

Early Records & Achievements

Founded at the dawn of the 20th century, Newby Hall Cricket Club has always been steeped in rich traditions and a passion for the game. ​

  • Founded around the turn of the century with rich traditions.

  • Cricket square established in the 1920s under Major E.R.F. Compton.

  • Achieved local fame in the 1930s, winning the Ripon Knock-out Competition twice.

  • The first records of games being played date back to 1923, marking our establishment year as "Est. 1923".

Post-War Era

The post-war years were a time of both challenges and resilience for the club. ​

  • Faced challenges, especially in the 1960s with a lack of scheduled matches.

  • Shifted focus to Sunday friendlies and evening cup competitions.

  • 1969 marked a crisis, but dedicated members like Wilf Virr and Chris Farrell ensured the club's resurgence.

The 1970s & Beyond

Joining the Nidderdale League in 1976 marked a new chapter for Newby Hall. ​

  • Joined the Nidderdale League in 1976.

  • First Nidderdale League club to recruit an overseas player, 1984 Mark Stirling.

  • League Division 1 winners in 1985 and 1986.

  • Division 1 winners in 1993.

  • Subsequent tough times in the later 90s as players retired.

New Millennium Challenges & Triumphs

The turn of the millennium brought unforeseen challenges, but Newby Hall rose to the occasion. ​

  • 2001 brought uncertainty with the Foot and Mouth disease.

  • Despite challenges, the club achieved multiple championships, introduced a Third XI, and built a new pitch.

  • 2006 was historic with Newby Hall winning three separate divisions in the Nidderdale League.

Recent Achievements

The club's commitment to growth and excellence continued into the recent years. ​

  • Like many local teams, faced challenges in fielding teams due to diminishing interest, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Currently have one Saturday team.

  • A new committee was formed for 2024, bringing new ideas, energy, and passion. Committed to growing the club and ensuring a bright future.
